Where research is needed: Education

What questions do we still need answers to before we deliver consistent, evidence based skin education across all levels?

Before we regulate titles and pathways, we need to understand how current skin education works—and where it fails. Research in this area can inform future training structures, standards, and delivery routes.

Core research questions:

  1. What is the impact of delivering standardised, theoretical skin education (SCIM) across Levels 3 to 7 on public outcomes and practitioner consistency?

  2. Can SCIM be delivered as a standalone unit to improve service delivery in adjacent sectors (e.g. NHS 111, education, social care)?

  3. How well does current skin education (as taught through AP&P and NOS) prepare practitioners for evidence-based decision-making?

  4. What misconceptions are most common among beauty and skin professionals, and how does theory-based education affect this?

  5. Could skin competency modules improve regulatory compliance and reduce insurance claims?

  6. Would including SCIM in NHS and university CPD programmes (e.g. for call handlers, pharmacists, PAs) improve public confidence and triage accuracy?

  7. How does theoretical skin education (vs. practical training alone) affect practitioner safety when using advanced treatments
