Pillar One: Public Messaging
Because everyone has skin—and not everyone knows how to care for it.
Skin is the body’s largest organ. It’s also one of the most visible—and one of the most overlooked in national health communication.
Right now, there is no central source of NHS-backed skin care advice for the general public.
No unified message across departments.
No standard guidance that says: this is how to protect your skin in daily life, whatever your age, lifestyle, job, or skin type.
And yet:
Over 60% of people in the UK have experienced a skin condition.
70% of people with visible skin issues say it affects their confidence.
1 in 5 children has eczema.
Around 100,000 new skin cancer cases are diagnosed every year.
Skin health matters.
Not just because of illness, but because of wellbeing. Mental health. Confidence. Comfort. And quality of life.
Many of these conditions are preventable or manageable with the right support—but that support must start with clear, trusted, public information.
This pillar explores how national skin messaging could work.
What already exists in pockets—and what could be expanded.
And why improving skin knowledge helps the individual, the health system, and the state.
